A calendar covered with much-appreciated

events and dates awaited members of the

Bristol Bird Club Tuesday evening as energetic

birders gathered at the Bristol Public Library

for their July meeting.

Janice Martin reached deep into BBC's taproot

of tradition and struck a resounding chord

of harmony when it was announced that

every member's voice and input makes a

difference and the membership will vote on

initiatives and policies.

She quickly flashed a six-item "Member

Imput" questionnaire seeking to uncover

strengths and weaknesses. Field trips

was a subject of focus among everyone.

In a small club like BBC, it was apparent

that most everyone had ideas and

wanted to nominate birding walks. Many

quickly stepped forward and offer to

help lead events.

Next Bird Walk

Saturday, August 8,

7:30am to 8:30am

Virginia Creeper

Trailhead in Abingdon.

We'll return to our roots at the festival.

Randy Smith will lead a walk over a short

stretch of the beautiful 35-mile-long trail

leading out from Abingdon. We'll have

more details soon. Bring binoculars,

water, and field guide to fully enjoy this

event. Migration of land birds will begin.

With smiles of delight and praise, BBC will

return to Addilynn Memorial United

Methodist Church in Bristol, TN for the

annual banquet which has been reserved

for Friday, Oct 2, at 6:30 p.m.

A "Black Saturday" annual field trip is

scheduled for the weekend after

Thanksgiving (Nov. 28), restoring an

event we enjoyed for many years but

had crowded off our schedules. The

name is new. Details TBA.

We go back to Burke's Garden for our

long-enjoyed early-winter scouting

trip of Golden Eagles Sat., Nov. 14. You

will be thrilled at what is new for us in

birding in the garden this winter. BBC

member Clancey Deel will be one of our

leaders and he has made new friends and

found new birders for us in the valley

and in Tazewell County. Just wait and see !

We have been surprised to learn that the

Civitan Shelter at Steele Creek Park was

reserved for the 2016 club picnic even

before we held this year's event in late

June. The city secured it for us without

a payment because the new treasurer

does not yet have our checkbook, etc.

for the coming year. The Parks & Rec

Dept. said no problem. They will wait.

Also , a location for the 2015

annual BBC Christmas Party

has been offered and the party date

is set for Saturday, Dec. 5.

Kevin Blaylock asked to have the

Mount Rogers Scales High Country

4-Wheel Drive birding trip to see

the Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers on

territories established as an annual

event. He was on this year's trip

and added much to its success.

Roy Knispel approached the President

suggesting that three traditional field

trips held jointly with the Lee & Lois

Herndon TOS Chapter be restored to

the calendar. Those will, no doubt,

receive approval from BBC members.

BBC's beloved "Soup-'N Sparrow"

morning birdwalk at the weir dam

and lunch nearby with the South

Holston Ruritan Club will be on the

event list - Jan. 30, 2016.

A planning meeting for the Christmas

Bird Counts will be back on the agenda

after being set aside for a couple of

years. It returns on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

More details to follow.

The Bristol Christmas Bird Count will be

held Sunday, Dec 27. The Shady Valley

Count on Friday, January 1st. A date for

The Glade Spring CBC is being determined.

We will return to Burke's Garden for our

Annual Mid-Winter Golden Eagle Field Trip

set for Saturday, Feb 6. It will have some

new and interesting features. This year's

winter field trip will be our 26th year of

February trips to the garden.

President Martin said she had "sad news"

in announcing that Ruth Clark and

daughter Mary Clark are returning to

husband Forrest Clark, moved to Bristol

from Kissimmee in 2008 and attended

BBC meetings until he passed away in

Jan 2009. The Clarks are moving from

Bristol this coming weekend.

BBC also learned that Mary Jane Erwin,

a loyal member of the club for 23 years,

is no longer a member. She joined in

the fall of 1991.

Kevin Blaylock, a member and officer of

BBC, says the club's third-sponsored

Rainforest Adventure trip is full. The

trip goes to the Pantanal of Brazil

Sept. 12 thru Sept 20 and will bird

the world's largest tropical wetland.

Wallace Coffey reported that the club

owns 28 copies of The Birds of Northeast

Tennessee.

Randy Smith presented an informative

and entertaining program about birding

one of his favorite South Carolina haunts

at Hunting Beach State Park.
