A large turnout of birders was present for the Bristol Bird Club meeting (16 Nov) to hear member Tom Hunter present an excellent program about his recent birding trip to Peru. Weaving bits and pieces of Peru's culture, history and geography, along with many of the birds he saw and photographed, he presented a beautiful PowerPoint talk. He said about 400 bird species are present in the region. But his talk and photos included many mammals, insects, plants and such. President Dave Worley announced early on that the BBC Christmas Party would be at the home of member Ellen Parker. He said the date will be posted as soon as they determine what is most practical. Hunter, who coordinated the Mendota Hawk Migration lookout, gave a report and said a more detailed accounting would soon be posted to the lists. Members were told that Dr. Ed Burke, one of two living charter members of BBC in March 1950, was seriously injured in a recent fall and has been in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was reported as much improved and a satisfactory recovery is anticipated. BBC has acquired the first of three heating devices for keeping hummer feeders thawed in freezing temperatures when a winter hummer is coming to feeders anywhere in the region. The shield and heat element is along the lines of one posted recently on Bristol Birds Net. After the experience of a hummer at Musick's Campground last winter, which had been previously banded in Mississippi, it was determined that the club's ability to provide a loaned heat element to such hosting sites, may be the difference in sustaining a bird until it can be at least captured, identified and banded. Members felt that some feeder hosts may not be able to purchase such heating devices due to any of several reasons including affordability, economy, time constraints or simply lack of motivation to figure out how to get it all purchased and put in place. The loaned heating devices will be carefully identified as property of BBC and an attempt will be made to get each recovered after it is no longer needed. One will be kept in Northeast Tennessee, one in Southwest Virginia and one at Bristol. A brief discussion of planning for the annual Christmas Bird Counts included dates, planning meeting and compilations. BBC sponsors counts at Bristol, Glade Spring, Kingsport and Shady Valley/Mountain City. Members were told that a proposal will likely be made to have a single registration fee for the 2012 Joint TOS/VSO annual state meeting at Johnson City. The registration would include all costs for all events. Breaking out individual components in an a la carte manner, as in individual state meetings, would not be available. This would simplify record keeping, create easier management and provide a better projection of funds expected for budget purposes. Members were asked to begin thinking about the possibility and make whatever feedback might be useful. The method might then be considered by the joint meeting committee at a later date. It was felt that making a democratic member input to the proposal now, would provide ample opportunity for consideration so everyone knows what might be in the works.
