Two dozen area birders turned out
Tuesday night for the Bristol Bird Club's
first meeting held at the city's public
library. Half of them kicked off the
evening at the Mad Greek Restaurant
for a social Dutch dinner at 6 p.m.

Treasurer Janice Martin put together
an open house reception and the club
enjoyed two new members who came
for the opening night at the library.

The treasurer reported that the club income and cash on hand
July 1 thru Dec 15 was $ 5,984.50 with expenses of $ 4,254.35.
Since Dec 15, expenses were $ 345 with income of $ 1,045.
The balance is currently $ 2,902.15. A cash gift of $ 1,000 was
received by the club to establish the Dr. Lee R. Herndon memorial
fund to support the mentoring of young birders.

Wilma Boy, Michele Sparks and Wallace Coffey were named as
the nominating committee to produce a slate of officers to be placed
in nomination at the April meeting, voted on at the May meeting, and
elected officers will take office at the June picnic.

V-P John Hay presented the second part of his birds of Chile.

Everyone enjoyed the modern beauty of the new facility as well as
the kitchen to prepare food and the easy access from the well-
lighted parking lot.

The year 2009 marks the fifth anniversary of the completion of
the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, the nation's first statewide
wildlife viewing trail, with more than 600 sites. The Virginia Department
of Game and Inland Fisheries is sponsoring and financing a series
of "Getting to Know You Tours" across the state. The BBC has
agreed to sponsor several bird walks with VDGIF across the region
and provide birders to lead the walks in various areas. The project
was recommended by President Dave Worley.

Bill Grigsby said we are on track to again sponsor the July 11 and 15
Funfest Bird Walks at 8 a.m. each day at Bays Mountain Park. The
BBC will be again financed by Ward's Feed Store, Inc. of Kingsport
who will pay our entry fees for the events.

Attending the meeting were (* indicates those dining at the Mad
Greek): Diana Worley, Dave Worley, Janice Martin, Fred Martin,
