A group of 30 birders turned out Tuesday (8/18)
for the Bristol Bird Club August meeting and
received bundles of the club's new brochure
which was produced earlier this month. Most
left with hands full of shrink-wrapped brochures
to deliver to the public and people who are not
aware of BBC or what the club has to offer.

BBC has invested in 2,000 copies which have a short
shelf life and are designed to extend the club's outreach
to youth, children and persons either just starting to bird
or those who want to give it a try. It will be an extension
of the club's Beginner Bird Walks and public festival
birding events throughout the region.

The design, layout and printing prep was all done by
members Mike Poe, Michele Sparks and Wallace Coffey.
The concept of a brochure was initiated in July 2008 by
Sparks, who was the 2008 Birder of the Year.

Nora Schubert, a Roan Mountain Massif seasonal
ecologist for Southern Appalachian Highlands
Conservancy, presented a neat program.

Her subject was Fall migration of the Sora-- her
University of Arkansas Master of Science degree
research in biology with her research carried out at
Four Rivers Conservation Area, near Rich Hill, Missouri
during the migration of 2004.

Her rail ecology study was conducted from
15 Aug thru 30 Nov. The objects of this research were
to assess migration chronology, habitat use, and
movements by capturing (spotlighting and mist-netting),
banding, attaching radios and radio-tracking Soras
and Virginia Rails during day and night hours. The
study mostly involved studying Soras with radio
telemetry, field observation and some mist-netting,
but the nets were not very productive.

Birders present for the meeting, included visitors
Nancy McPeak* of Bristol and Steve McClelland
and Lola McClelland who live on the South Fork Holston
River upstream from Hickory Tree.

Others attending were Nora Schubert, Lisa Tyler*,
Larry McDaniel*, Judy Roach*, Lois Cox*, Wilma Boy*,
Mary Clark, Dave Worley, Diane Worley, Fred Martin,
Janice Martin, Tom Hunter*, Rob Biller, Mike Poe,
Charlie Powell*, Bill Grigsby*, Rick Knight*, Joe Ortola*,
Roy Knispel*, Donald Leech, Michelle Villeneuve,
John Hay*, Mary Jane Erwin*, Wallace Coffey* and
Carolyn Coffey*. (* indicates those having dinner at
the Mad Greek before the meeting)

Tom Hunter, who will be coordinate the fall Mendota
Hawk Migration for the club, said he would be underway
early in September and would soon circulate a calendar
of dates for coverage and asked everyone to pitch in.

Several members paid their reservation for the BBC
September 18th 6 p.m. annual banquet to be held at
Addilyn Memorial United Methodist Church in Bristol
Tennessee. The cost is $13 per person and includes
a menu of roast beef and chicken with wild rice and gravy,
sides, dessert and drinks.

Tom Hunter will be the banquet speaker, presenting a
talk on his birding trip to Ecuador.
