While watching the yard this afternoon, I had a very unusual experience. I had seen Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows both checking out one of my boxes in the past few days. As I was looking around for them, all the birds scattered in different directions. When I scanned the nearby trees, there was a Sharp-shinned Hawk that had just landed in the top of a tree across the street. The afternoon sun was hitting directly on it, so I started studying it. After looking at it for several minutes, I noticed that the hawk was looking straight down. When I looked down, I saw a Common Grackle twenty feet below looking up at the hawk. After about a minute or so, the Grackle decided to flee the scene. It was only a few feet away from the tree when the Sharpie landed on its back and drove it into a nearby thicket. The two birds seemed to be almost the same size, but it was over very quickly. That's the closest I've ever been to a kill. I don't know how everyone else looks at it, but it's brutal and beautiful all at the same time. It was an amazing sight. Gary Cooper Bristol, Virginia
