Dutch Bottoms, Cocke county, 8/22/07, 6:00-8:00 PM Douglas Lake elevation: 963.7We could see big shorebirds from 25E, across from Dutch Bottoms Church, and put the canoe in at the Walters Bridge ramp for a closer look. We counted 11 AMERICAN AVOCETS, with only one showing any hint of breeding plumage. Peeps numbered over 200, nearly all least sandpipers, & exceeding killdeer (about 150) for the first time this season. Only ruddy turnstones were missing from the shorebird list of 8/22.
Still there: black-bellied & semipalmated plover, PIPING PLOVER, WESTERN WILLETS (3 today), greater & lesser yellowlegs; least, semipalm & pectoral sandpipers, & short-billed dowitchers.
