On Tuesday afternoon, March 25, Ruth Baker Smith, Reece Jamerson, Howard Langridge and Bryan Stevens birded at Austin Springs in Washington County, TN, and at Musick's Campground (and the adjacent TVA access area) in Sullivan County, TN. At Austin Springs, the best finds included 11 Pectoral Sandpipers, 2 Common Snipe, and a mix of Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows and a single N. Rough-winged Swallow. Also had good looks at a male Hairy Woodpecker in a tree at the gate into the fields at Austin Springs. At Musick's Campground, we had 6 American Coots, a Great Blue Heron, a Field Sparrow and some Pied-billed Grebes. We had better luck in the TVA access area near Musicks. There we had at least 6 singing Pine Warblers (and got good looks at a couple), as well as three Horned Grebes. Also had a good look at two Bonaparte's Gulls among several dozen Ring-billed Gulls on a small island offshore from the boat launch. The biggest surprise was probably the Common Nighthawk that Ruth and Bryan heard calling overhead at the TVA access area. Howard and Reece didn't hear the bird. We didn't see the bird, however.
