Greeneville, Greene Co., TN

This evening at dusk, I found an American Woodcock in the field behind the Italian Village Restaurant in Greeneville. (This site is located on North Rufe Taylor Road on the eastern outskirts of town, about 0.2 mile from Highway 11-E.) I observed no evidence of display and doubt that I would have found the bird at all had I not flushed it by walking near its ground perch. This field has been a reliable spot for displaying American Woodcocks for at least the last five years, and I fully expect that display will commence soon, if it hasn't already.
