April 23, 2005 The Greeneville Chapter's spring count was held today--in rain, cold, wind, and occasional sleet. Birding was tough--few birds were vocalizing, and weather conditions made it hard to see or hear well for much of the day. Our tabulation is tomorrow, so no results are available yet, but I'll go ahead and post a few things from my list. I was on territory at about 5:15 a.m., in Midway community behind the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. Later I went to WMDC, then spent the rest of the morning working various roads from there down to Bewley's Bridge on the Nolichuckey River and back to Midway. In the afternoon, Alice Loftin and I birded various spots in and around Greeneville and points east of town, including Round Knob and Kinser Park (briefly), then travelled to Midway for a second attempt at a couple of hard-to-find species. After dark, we went up Greene Mountain for night birds. My total for the day was a hard-earned 89 species in fifteen hours. Alice added Prothonotary Warbler at Kinser Park. Here's a partial list of my finds: American Bittern; Blue-winged Teal; Sharp-shinned Hawk; Virginia Rail; Sora; Lesser Yellowlegs; Solitary Sandpiper; American Woodcock; Eurasian Collared-Dove; Eastern Screech-Owl; Chuck-will's-widow; Whip-poor-will; Red-headed Woodpecker; Cliff Swallow; Marsh Wren; Wood Thrush; American Pipit; Loggerhead Shrike; White-eyed Vireo; Blue-headed Vireo; Red-eyed Vireo; Yellow Warbler; Black-throated Green Warbler; Yellow-rumped warbler; Cape May Warbler; Prairie Warbler; Black-and-white Warbler; Ovenbird; Common Yellowthroat; Hooded Warbler; Kentucky Warbler; Scarlet Tanager; Blue Grosbeak; Grasshopper Sparrow; Orchard Oriole.
