24 April 2004 Sites visited (all in Greene County): Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC), all four units of Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management Area, Kinser Park (KP), Viking Mountain (VM), Greene Mountain, Round Knob (RK), Old Forge Recreation Area (OFRA), and many other locations ranging from the low elevation bottom lands in the extreme western portion of the county to a point about two thirds of the way up Viking Mountain (highest point in the county) Time spent: 16 hours (1.5 at night, covering 20 miles by car; 11 by day, covering 180 miles by car; 3.5 by day, covering 2.5 miles on foot) Saturday, 24 April was the date for TOS Greeneville's spring count, and I made a big push to cover a lot of area. By the end of the day, I was surprised to learn that I had totaled 112 species. Highlights of the day included: American Bittern (giving the thunder pumper call from the third pond at WMDC); Blue-winged Teal (16); Hooded Merganser (3 Sapp Road); Osprey (KP); Ruffed Grouse (VM); Wild Turkey (2); Northern Bobwhite (7); Greater Yellowlegs (11); Lesser Yellowlegs (3); Solitary Sandpiper (6); Spotted Sandpiper; Wilson's Snipe (4); Great Horned Owl (2 Huff Lane); Chuck-will's-widow (4--2 Huff Lane, 1 Tabor Road, 1 along Highway 11-E in Greeneville near its intersection with Highway 93); Whip-poor-will (8--6 RK, 2 OFRA); Red-headed Woodpecker (7--5 Green Road, 1 Bible's Chapel Road, 1 Smelser Road); Eastern Wood-Pewee (2); Horned Lark (2 Green Road); Cliff Swallow (35 Bewley's Bridge (Highway 340)); Marsh Wren (third pond at WMDC); Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (58); American Pipit (6 Green Road); Palm Warbler (5, including at least one singing); Cerulean Warbler (Harrison Road); Prairie Warbler (10); Prothonotary Warbler (2 KP); Swainson's Warbler (Smelser Road); Common Yellowthroat (78); Kentucky Warbler (2 Oakwood Road); Summer Tanager (7); Blue Grosbeak (20); Grasshopper Sparrow (52); Baltimore Oriole (Green Road).
