Hi Dan,
I will amend (and accordingly have amended below), my findings to say ‘next
section of the screen’ instead of ‘next field’; and to say that this bonking
etc happens when using a keyboard with VoiceOver, be that a Bluetooth
keyboard or a refreshable Braille display’s keys. So, not so much movement
between fields within a section, as movement between one section and the
next (for logging in, PIN entry, form-filling, etc.)
You will, of course, be logged out again after a few minutes of inactivity,
as standard. The effect of the buggy keyboard restrictions I described is
that data input/submittal is slowed significantly.
In my case, I have at least three or four apps that are affected, each of
which require you to have a customer account beforehand in order to use the
app fully. Thus, there is a level of security entailed. MySSEAirtricity;
Bank of Ireland; and Access Credit Union (area local to me). (I haven’t
tried the AIB app, but suspect that it would be the same.) Not all
interactive apps are thus. It could even be a ‘Javascript’ issue, as in the
Airtricity app I’ve heard mention from VoiceOver of something to do with
that.)
Now there may be good news over the horizon. We heard from Dave N. that Beta
2 of iOS14 fixes several VoiceOver issues. Also, be assured that I am not
the only person to have commented adversely on VO’s performance in iOS14.

Hi Flor,
Many thanks for your reply. Have you an example of an App and a website that
this is happening on – I would like to investigate this further.
Looking forward to your reply.
Warmest Regards,
Daniel.

And now, cometh the bad news.
This is not limited to entry in Braille; but I’ve found a few apps/Web sites
where VoiceOver in iOS14.1 no longer let me move to the next section of the
screen with the usual swipes or down-arrow etc, but wants to ‘back’ out
again. I have to explore the screen by touch, and double-tap at the
point(s)where I want to input data. ‘Awkward’ is a very mild description of
the problem.

Hi Daniel and All,
When the App Store wouldn’t load for me on Saturday night, I decided that it
was time to get iOS14.1 on board. So I downloaded and installed it.
So far, my experience using it on a 6s has been good, apart from one
non-Braille-related podcast app that no longer works on iOS14 – the solution
to that was to (more or less) delete and then re-download the (working)
version from the Ap Store.
Also I have had no VoiceOver focus loss issues so far.
I’ve found that the Braille Auto Advance works well, and I may even make a
suggestion or two to Vispero on how they could improve their rendering –
Apple have it moving by smaller invervals, like 0.1 of a second rather than
0.5 in the FS/Vispero implementation.
One or two other little things: Apple now use abbreviations in Braille such
as tb for Tab and sch for Search, along with the usual btn for Button.
It’s early days yet with me, but I may say I haven’t yet found any issues
with Braille in iOS14.x. (I use the Focus Braille display for a lot of my
navigation and reading articles etc when I want detail. I also like to read
nonfiction books thus.)

Hi Flor,
Many thanks for getting back to me re: iOS14. Can you explain the Focus
Jumping Issue a little more to me? I notice that an update 14.01 was
released earlier this week, so perhaps they addressed this issue… one
ponders!
Warmest Regards and Stay Safe,
Daniel.
PS: Dereck, I’m getting your emails too!

Hi Dereck, All,
Because of my pretty negative experiences when I first downloaded and
installed iOS13 last year - serious battery drain necessitating my getting a
replacement battery, annoying auto-repeating notifications, etc, - I haven’t
yet taken the plunge into iOS14. Whenever I do install iOS14, I’m looking
forward to experimenting with the new auto-advance feature in Braille
seettingsd (It’s said to work great.) I’m not looking forward to having the
focus jumping issue, which many people seem to experience in iOS14.
