Subject: SCBI Training Course: Grant Writing and Management for Conservation
Professionals

Dear Colleagues,

We are very happy to announce the third course in our series of conservation
capacity building programs focused on conservation issues and needs in the
southern Africa region. Our previous two courses (Species Monitoring and
Conservation: Large Carnivores, Ungulates and Grassland Vegetation AND
Livestock and Range Management for Trainers) were a great success and we're
happy to be continuing to develop additional programs, largely based on the
feedback and interactions from our initial needs assessment last year in
Gaborone. Please circulate this announcement widely. We will need particular
assistance in spreading the word outside of Botswana, so please send this to
any colleagues throughout southern Africa that may benefit from the program.

We are proud of the programs that are currently being developed, and are
grateful to all of you for support and guidance that you've provided along the
way.

Don't hesitate to contact me directly with any questions you might have. I've
attached a pdf file that may be effective for posting at your offices or
printed distribution as well.

All the best,

Joe

The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute is pleased to announce a new
course for wildlife conservation professionals in southern Africa: Grant

LOCATION: Gaborone International Convention Centre, Gaborone, Botswana

APPLICATION DEADLINE: December 28th, 2011.

A successful conservation career depends on the ability to write
scientifically, especially to secure funding to support programs and projects
involving research, training and infrastructure. Generally the ability to
effectively communicate by writing a successful grant also leads to an improved
capacity to produce scientific publications. This seminar's goal is to provide
insights and direct experiences in preparing and writing successful scientific
grants and in follow-up management of awarded grant funds. The lectures and
group/individual activities will directly apply to improving one's ability to
produce high quality proposals as well as scientific publications.

The course elements include lectures and interactions pertaining to: writing
tips, key elements in project design, proposal preparation, budgeting,
reporting, grant management and donor stewardship. Participants will develop
their own proposals and receive feedback from experienced professionals.
Guidance will also be provided on how to find sources of funding relevant to
wildlife research and management.

Course presenters include Dr. Susie Ellis, Executive Director of the
International Rhino Foundation and Dr. David E. Wildt, Smithsonian Conservation
Biology Institute. Collectively, Drs. Ellis and Wildt have more than 50 years
of experience securing conservation-oriented financial support and publications
in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Participants must be proficient in both reading and writing in English and will
need to bring a laptop computer to the course. All participants must commit to
the entire 3-day workshop. Participation will be on a first-come, first-served
basis, and will be limited to no more than 25 individuals.
