Have you considered having copies of the materials you need to read made in the
library and then take them with you to scan instead? I wouldn't want to read
lots of materials with the thing, though maybe I wouldn't mind it if I really
got into it. I thought it would be nice to use in class for things like
handouts and that sort of thing, but I probably would have tried this idea of
yours once if I had the device.
