That is quite an impressive story Brian. I suppose these news people are
used to things like weather and scheduling problems, but it sounds like you
and your wife did a great job of cooperating during your participation!
Wow!

Thanks Dianne. It was a crazy scene for several reasons.

As you probably know, TV filming schedules are pretty fast and furious -- I
received a call on Friday, February 9 from the Bookshare folks asking if I
were interested in participating in the shoot early that next week. The CBS
producer called me that evening, and we starting planning all the logistics
right away.

Among the challenges were:

* Weather -- bad weather dogged the shoot from New York down to Alexandria,
VA where they did the filming of me and my wife; you can see in the pictures
of me walking to the metro that the ground is covered with ice and snow. We
had just had a major ice storm the day before, and the sidewalks were a
nightmare. We had to strategically pick a segment of my usual walk to the
metro that wasn't a serious hazard to life and limb. Thursday evening, Feb
15, when Byran Pitts came to interview us at home, the sound guy and I were
out on my front porch with hammers trying to break up the super-slick
iceflow/glacier that had formed all up and down our front doorsteps and
walkway. We didn't want the CBS senior correspondant to break a leg on his
way in.

* The bi-coastal nature of the shoot. The footage of the Bookshare office
and Jim Fruchterman were all out in Palo Alto, California, and the footage
of me and my wife were in Alexandria, Virginia. The shots make it look,
however, as if we are all right next door to each other.

* Other travel plans -- My wife and I were scheduled to fly to Ireland on
Friday, Feb 16, so we had to get all the footage done before our flight,
weather notwithstanding. Plus, my wife and I had to pack our bags while the
camera and sound guys were rearranging our living room for the interview,
and while we all waited for Byran Pitts to arrive from California.

I should say the CBS folks were terrific from moment one to moment last. I
felt good about their approach to the story from the beginning, which is in
part what convinced me to participate, and I wasn't disappointed by their
final product. They were very friendly, apologetic for being in our way,
and they bought us pizza for dinner the night of the interview when we were
crazy busy getting ready to fly to Europe.

So there's a taste of how it all went down, and what went into those 3
minutes eighteen seconds of airtime.

Best,
Brian Miller

  Brian,

You and your wife were terrific spokespeople for Bookshare. I am sure
going through the filming was quite an experience. I have done that kind of
thing for other purposes, and it is an experience to say the least.

Congratulations to Bookshare for its anniversary. It is truly a joy to
have such a library.

Thanks Rita. There were a few people featured that didn't get screen
credits. Jim, myself, and my wife are the only ones identified on the
piece.
