The night sky always looked black to me, unless we are, perhaps, talking
about the last phase of twilight.

Hi Cindy,

Well, I don't remember much, but I do remember my father getting really
upset with authors who talked about night's black sky because he said it isn't,
it's dark, dark blue.  I remember him driving into our driveway at night
and looking up and saying, "Oh, there's venus."  I remember him describing
sunsets
with orange and pink and so on.  He would describe things like unusual
skies before or after storms.  He just used regular words and regular colors and
expected me to understand and to comprehend as much as I could.  I have no
experiencial way to describe color, but color is part of our world, and I
understand
it as best I can.

My father would take me on hikes and pinch off sasserfrass leaves so I
could smell them.  Oh, lots of things.  He would describe people walking on the
street if they were unusual or wore unusual clothes.  My mother described
things too, but she was the one who talked about clothes and fashion and what
looked good on me and what didn't.  She was the one who drilled me in
social conventions and so on.  Woe to me if I said or did anything untoward when
out in company.  <smiling>  I remember being quizzed when I got home from
some party or other, "Who was there?  How is so-and-so?  what is her daughter
doing now?  What school is he going to now?  How is so-and-so's mother..."
I could never answer all the questions.  <smiling reminescently>  Mother
assured
me that I couldn't remember because I was self absorbed and wasn't paying
attention.

God bless them both, and God rest them.  They did, I think, a creditable
job of raising me.  I just hope I come up to their expectations.
