Littlekat, Validating is easy. You just do what you're doing, i.e., reading the book. The difference is that you fill fix the sentence that's messed up when you can figure out what it is. Also, you check to make sure all the pages are there and that the copyright information is there. I'm so sorry you were raped. I, fortunately, never have been, but I cannot read books or see movies where people are raped or women are put in extreme jeopardy. An excellent movie from years ago, with Sophia Loren, is Two Women, but there is a terrible scene in which she and her daughter are raped by Moorish soldiers. It's burned into my brain. She's a strong woman and a survivor, and it was an excellent movie, but that's the only thing I can remember about it and I can see it still.
