The Romance Book Club held its first meeting of the spring on Friday, March 21, 2008. A lengthy discussion was had about Emma by Jane Austin. We spoke about how both the romance genre and women’s roles have changed since the writing of this book in 1816. Most who attended considered Emma to be slow going with some interesting parts and unusual characters. Amber liked the book and shared the following about Jane Austin’s life: Jane Austen wrote her books in a time when many women were relegated to an arranged-marriage status. What made Austen's books interesting was the fact that her characters often married for love, which was rare. most marriages at that time were political or done for an economic or social advantage. For additional info visit http://www.pemberley.com which has the text of Jane Austin’s books online, both with and without notes. Additional info can be found at the Jane Austin Society of North America or jasna.org.
