Hi Cindy,I remember a few years ago hearing about a web site that had a game of identifying graphics. A sighted person looked at a picture and then typed in what they saw in the picture.
If they guessed correctly, they got a point. I think the top point earner got a prize. This game created a data base of descriptions that could then be used for alt-text attached to the graphic.
I can imagine a similar web site for graphic novels. Each sighted person looking at the first frame of a graphic novel would have to describe it in text before going to the next frame. Then, the most common description for each frame could be used to create a text version of the graphic novel.

I'm sending this to everyone because I think it was so nice that the author/artist of Laika, the graphic novel that Shelley wants to read, responded to my letter. Unfortunately, as he explains, there is no straight text that can be sent to bookshare. That's not the way he works. It seems to me that the only way a graphic novel can get to those of you who are blind would be if NLS or some organization could get actors to read it. To whom would one make such a suggestion? More and more graphic novels are being produced, and especially for children and young adults, it would be nice if they were available. I've spent the last couple of days struggling to come up with a viable solution to the problem you outline. In truth, you've caught me at an abnormally busy time, so when I can get a spare little while, I'll consider the situation more fully. I was saddened to learn of the situation with the member of your organization, as I'd really like for her to read my book. It's definitely a disadvantage of this particular communications medium that it can't be easily converted into another format. I wish I could say there existed a strightforward "script" to the book; unfortunately, that's not the way I work - apart from an early six- page outline, there never was typed manuscript as such. The early drafts of the story exist mostly as 'thumbnails', tiny scribbled drawings with lots of ballooned dialogue. There is a fair amount of writing too of course, but it all got boiled down and absorbed by telling as much of the story as possible through pictures. There is actually a beta of a website I am preparing based on some lectures I did last year (URL below) that explains my working method (go to the 'About' section and you can see the outline I mentioned earlier, plus a whole bunch of other stuff). http://www.nickabadzis.com/laika/ None of this helps your member, of course, which will probably be the most frustrating answer I can give. For that, I can only apologize. As I say, if I can figure out a way of converting what exists into something that can be read in a reasonably satisfactory manner by someone either partially sighted or blind, I will of course be in contact again. So, 'til then, I'm working on it.
