It is available, and I just got mine in the mail today. I haven't installed
the drivers, though.

Hi, Ron. If you're going to scan textbooks or other thick books, the
OpticBook 3600 is designed specifically for such tasks. It's available at
amazon.com for $239. It's a book edge scanner, meaning that it can scan right
up to the spine of a book. If you have a smaller budget to work with, both the
Canon LIde scanners and the OneTouch Visioneer 7300 produce clear scans. Both
of these scanners are compact, work easily with Kurzweil, and can fit into a
laptop bag if your son needs to scan things using a laptop. The OneTouch
Visioneer 7300 is being sold for $49 at Office Depot and $39 at Big Lots. I own
this scanner and find it to be both quick and quiet. The Canon CanoScan models
all work well with Kurzweil and range in price from the LIde 25 at $49 to the
much faster LIde 70 being sold for $79. Amazon sells all of these scanners and
ships quickly. You can find these at Office Depot, Staples, and even Wal-Mart
sometimes. I owned a LIde 30 for five years and got some great scans from that
machine. If you're going to buy a scanner from this line, there is a marked
difference in scanning speed between the LIde 60 and the lower numbered models
so that if you have the $30 that's the difference in price, you would be wise
to go with a 60 or later.

I hope this helps you with finding a good scanner. Epson makes good scanners
too. I don't own any of those though and so can't comment of their price or
quality.

etc.

Anything you've found helpful is likely to be of use to me. I'm especially
interested in which scanners people have had good results with. Kurzweil does
not work directly with my current scanner ; I have to scan documents into a pdf
file and then feed them in to Kurzweil.

    Thanks in advance.
