Actually for the cassette books, the narrators must do research before hand
about how to pronounce the words. NLS pays by the "good recorded minute"
and it isn't a lot for the minute last time I checked. You have to make
sure you are pronouncing the words correctly, and any errors that are made
in the tapes must be corrected.
NLS's website lists all the steps a book goes through.
It is very time consuming.
At the ACB convention we have a narrator come every year and Gordon Gould
was the one I hard speak. he talked about all the extra research he has to
do, and that if his "proofreader" doesn't like how it comes out, he has to
do it over again.
So... yes, the cassette books do indeed go through a form of transcription.
Now RFB and D, obviously doesn't have such "high" standards and it shows
sometimes.

Doing transcription, maybe, but I don't see how that applies to spoken-word
recordings.
