A few months back, my regional library (Braille Institute of Los Angeles) was
doing a survey for its patrons on eBooks. I filled it out and was contacted by
the BL with a promo code for Bookshare. I’m a huge fan of BS and have been a
member off and on since 2004. In fact, I recall sitting in on a talk/seminar by
Jim Fruchterman back in 2001 at CSUN when it was still held out by the Los
Angeles airport on the idea of Bookshare and what it could be.
Anyway, after redeeming my Braille Institute code, looks like my sub is now
active through 2025.
If you’ve got BARD access, then you have to have some sort of NLS affiliated
library or something. Maybe they can help you out. That or as others have said,
perhaps do a free course with Hadley.
Bookshare really is the best.

Miriam, thank you for that information about libraries providing patrons with
bookshare membership; I'm hoping hat I'll have enough credits to get my own by
the time I need it, ( better get back to work and finish my books; smile;
fortunately, though I used to live in Mpls and in fact worked in the library
( many decades ago I now live in CA; Barbara, if you have time write to me
offlist and tell me where there you live; I love that city; do you live near
any of the lakes?

Miriam, I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At one time we had one of the finest

it’s really turned into a nightmare. I am glad I don’t have to deal with them
all that much and that I can download my books from Bard.

I might be incorrect about this but I believe the NYC program includes other

Still I do wonder where Barbara lives as well.

My goodness. Where do you live? The Talking Book Library in New York City,
which now serves the entire NY metro area, gave every patron a code to
submit to Bookshare, perhaps two years ago, and that entitles us to free
Bookshare memberships. Mine is good for several years. I imagine that this
depends on state funding for libraries. As fedral funds for various services
diminish, state funding will also diminish and that will mean that even
states like New York and California won't be able to afford to provide as
many services as they do now.

LOL, my library called me back and you can believe this or not, they don’t
even know what book share is. What can I say?

Barb,
Are you sure that your regional library doesn't have an arrangement with
Bookshare which provides its patrons with free memberships?

Once again, it is time for me to renew my book share membership. I waited
until the very last minute hoping that perhaps I would have some financial
resources myself, but, unfortunately, once again, that did not happen.
I think there is a proper way to do this, so I’m hoping that someone will
tell me the steps that I do have to take to see if someone will have extra
credits to be able to help me renew my membership.
Thank you so much for your prompt response. I look forward to reading your
suggestions.
