Since folks are so fond of being excruciatingly pedantic on this list,
I'd like to point out that the file name extensions, as they exist on the
bookport, bear no resemblance to what they were on the original computer.
So, what's really being argued about is what the original extension of the
file was on the computer, before it was transfered to the bookport. It
strikes me that what would make everyone happy here, and not be too hard,
would be the following:

The software would let you select whether you wanted title information to
come from the first line of a document, or the ID3 tag of an MP3 file, or
from the file name of the original file on the computer.
If you select "produce title from original file name", then you would
be given a choice as to whether or not you wanted the original file
extension included in the title.
the first menu choice is there, it's the second which is not, and
which would probably be fairly straightforward to add.
By the way, I don't know if the transfer utility can extract title
information from ID3 tags within MP3 files, I just think it would be cool
if it could.
