This discussion was initiated in the context of the _new_ Book Port user and 
the _new_ user has virtually no reason to care about the file extension. 
Besides, Sandy's message, pointing out that all file types except audio 
files are converted to text, pretty well sums up my argument.

I'd nonvehemently disagree with your last point. I think the file
extension is relevant to the end user. We all have extraneous pieces of
info we don't care to hear but which is still relevant to the next person.
