You can certainly use rechargeable batteries. Many on this list use them. I don't, because, whenever I can afford them, I use Lithium double A's. whenever you use both Lithiums and rechargeables, the battery indicator on the Bookport is not accurate. Just buy a reputable brand of rechargeables, and you should be good to go.

The person I spoke with recommended against it, because if memory serves and I understood him correctly, he said that if there were some discrepancy between the level of current at which those batteries charged and what the device could take it could be damaged.
