Oh that problem...

That is a bug in the LAME encoder. You won't be able to send those
files to the Book Port, unless you convert them with another program
first. The version of LAME we use crashes with when the source file
has an 8000 Hz sample rate. If it wasn't for these recorders, noone
would have found this one.

The files that I'm trying to send were originally recorded on my Sony 
digital recorder, so I used the Sony software to convert them to wave.
When I used the transfer program to send the files to the BP, the
program 
appeared to close after i selected the files.
