What!!! I can't imagine anyone doing such a thing. Anybody that would do that probably duplicated NLS cassettes too (for shame).

Like the way none of us ever coppied regular talkingbooks; because we weren't sure we could ever get them again, or what shape they'd be in?
Never. Grin.

I wonder whether, in their infinite wisdom, the NLS decision
makers might consider disabling the headphone jacks. After all,
the headphone jack does constitute a security risk. We certainly
don't want these blind people making analog copies and then
distributing them, possibly for profit.

This is primarily a money and posturing issue. NLS has invested
heavily
in convincing everyone from Congress to the press that their
method is
secure, proprietary, and exclusive. That's why they've needed so
many
years and millions of dollars for research. Since Humanware won
the bid
for designing their players, it stands to reason that a perceived
or
actual rival would be locked out. If NLS let you transfer files
with a
normal computer or a Book Port, they might have to admit to
Congress
that most of their antics over the past ten years were for show,
not
practicality. I'm not normally a negative person. However, I've
seen NLS
and other agencies play this game too many times before, and it
really
bugs me. It doesn't make it more pleasant because I understand
the rules
of this game.
