[bookport] format card

Hello,
I finally got my 2gb sandisk card. This is the first time I'm going to use a
new card. Would anyone please clarify the following?
Once I insert the card, should I format it pressing the 4 buttons of the
corners before transferring data from the pc, or can I start transferring
without formatting?
Also, should I do this without connecting the bp to the computer?
