I use XP Pro and have never had a problem with Windows failing to recognize
the BP. Removing any default Windows driver is always dangerous, so I
wouldn't recommend doing this. It's very possible that the problem can be
resolved by opening the Properties dialog (ALT+ENTER) when the device is
selected in My Computer and changing the settings on the Autoplay page. If
anything other than "Take no action" is chosen, this will tend to override
the desired behavior when the Book Port is connected.

Hi,
I suspect you're using XP Pro?
Windows has decided that your book port is an mp3 device. What a
pain.
One way I solved this on one computer was to go into the control
panel under system, device manager, and look for USB devices.
When I found the one that had the mp3 device attached, I looked
at the driver details, found the driver filename and went and
deleted it.
Then the computer began recognizing the book port again.
Another approach is to delete the mp3 device.
Unfortunately, on another machine, XP Pro is always re-installing
the driver, but at least when I launch the book port transfer
software manually, it sees the book port.

It is too bad that Microsoft always thinks it knows best what we
want our computers to do.
