DoubleTalk serial can be had from www.rcsys.com and TrippleTalk USB which is
pretty much the same can be got from www.chirpingbat.com

There are definate reasons for the speech.
It is inexpensive. Doubletalk was the first really affordable hardware
speech for pc machines. It isalso very listenable. We are getting
spoiled with the natural sounding speech, but this really works well
it is cheap and Lary said it saves a lot of batteries and cost on
processing power.
So, if you want different speech, just send your files as speech.
