This is off topic, but can someone tell me if you can buy hardware
synthesizers that are double talk that work with jaws?

There are definate reasons for the speech.
It is inexpensive. Doubletalk was the first really affordable hardware
speech for pc machines. It isalso very listenable. We are getting
spoiled with the natural sounding speech, but this really works well
it is cheap and Lary said it saves a lot of batteries and cost on
processing power.
So, if you want different speech, just send your files as speech.
