Yes, an FM transmitter is a good way to extend the audio of the bookport, provided you don't mind being tied in one place with the transmitter. Even though my transmitter is small and can operate by batteries, it would still be a bit much to comfortably carry around. If I could find a Bluetooth receiver to attach to the transmitter, that would be handy. All those that I have found that aren't part of headphones require power, which isn't readily surplus.

Rather than use powered speakers, I much prefer to patch my
Bookport into an FM transmitter and listen on one of my radios.

Yes, you certainly can hook speakers to the headphone jack.  You
will probably want to purchase powered speakers since the audio
put out by the Book Port is actually pretty low for using
unpowered speakers.

One nice set of powered speakers that have a good sound and good
price are a set of battery powered stereo speakers that fold
together and can be purchased from Radio Shack for around $30.
