Hi Julia,
I'm sure you tried this, but are you sure your batteries aren't going flat?  I 
have heard my BookPort make similar hissing and whistling noises when my 
batteries were dying.

This did occur to me.  However, although the MP3s were a lot louder than the 
speech, they were not distorted.  It was only after a while that this happened. 
 I did try turning the volume down both on the keypad and in the settings but 
to no avail.  I tried a .wav file too and this was also very distorted whistles 
and sounds, but the MP3s I would say were more like white noise.

When I stopped the file, the white noise stopped.
