The highest value my BP battery check has reported on fully charged Ni-MH
batteries is about 80% on a fresh charge at the end of the recommended
charge cycle. In a day or so the level seems to drop down to the 60's
percentage range whether the batteries are in the BP or simply set aside
awaiting use. The batteries seem to hold in the sixties range for a good
amount of usage, similar to the way the several types of 1.5 volt batteries
hold a 100% battery reading for some time. Also, after using the BP for
perhaps an hour, I have experienced a drop of about 5%, but following a
"rest" of a few hours, the battery indicator will recover to almost the
previous level. And I have noticed that the first time I press the battery
check keys after a "rest" I get the low reading, but a few more quick
presses will produce a slightly higher reading, which then remains
consistent to actual battery performance until the next "rest" period.
Below a value of about 40% the rate of drop for Ni-MH batteries seems to be
faster than in the higher range of readings, and when the battery indicator
reports around 20%, there is almost no useable life left. I use two sets of
Ni-MH batteries and just rotate them through my 13 hour Radio Shack charger,
switching when the set in use is somewhere between the 30% and 50% level. .
The nickel-metal hydride battery cell at full capacity produces a voltage
less than 1.5 volts, but all batteries drop in voltage as they supply
whatever variable amount of milliamp current is being demanded. The
percentage battery level report from the BP does not have a direct, or
straight-line, correlation to hours of BP usage, but is a good relative
indicator when coupled with some actual experience.
