try resetting with the batteries not connected. Isn't there a hard reset for
the BP, if so, try that without batteries to see if it clears all the
registers.

Well no, I left the batteries out for 12 hours but I'm going to leave them
out again, when I powered up the machine I removed the card before powering
up, I would have thought I would have received at least a "bookport ready"
announcement but I didn't get that, just the same error I've been getting.
Anyway looks as though I'll be returning the player on Monday, I'll leave
the batteries out until tomorrow and try it once more gain then.

Good to see yuh here. Did you leave the batteries out a good 24 hours?
And do you have any other cards you can try? Got a card reader on your
computer? Giove the BP a day or so and see if it will work, without a card
installed.
