I agree with you I work making 30 thousand dollars a year and I can't buy
such things as the backdates and other such stuff. in fact I can't justify
buying anyway.
and why is it that blind folks have to be very techie in order to use some
of the stuff out there. if many sight folks had to work as hard to get a
thing to work they would not do it.

That is what I thought too, but I have noticed that that only works as long is it doesn't cross with the wants of certain people on the list who love to be critical of any idea that isn't theirs.
My concern at this point is that I see the Book Port as a device which could fill the need for a good book reader, and also the need for an easy to use organizer. It is fine for the techie bunch to say "well I have a PDA and don't need another one". But, I can think of a lot of blind folks that I work with as an assistive technology specialist with a state agency for the blind who can't use those wonderful PDAs and never will have the ability level to use a device as sophisticated as PacMate, BrailleNote, Maestro, etc. For them the best solution has been the Parot VoiceMate, but that is no longer made. For a long time it was the unit of choice, but over the past two years the workmanship went to pot on those units and we along with other agencies had to quit recommending them.
My point is there are a lot of non-techie people who could get a lot of use from a hand-held unit with a simple notetaker, alarms, basic calculator, and a simple way to save names, addresses and phone numbers. These people may or may not be able to use the book reading features, but those who can use the book reading features could also make use of the other features.
I guess I am a little tired of the technically gifted, who have the money to buy, and ability to use a PDA coming out with blatent attitudes that tell me that they have no idea what so many blind people cannot do or afford to do.
Finally, it is those independant living people who need this type of technology who state counselors may spend $300 or $400 for, but you will never convince them to purchase a $1200 or higher PDA for one of these folks.
