Having a current line or sentence function would be a good
feature, but I think it should not be a complicated key sequence.
I'd almost prefer changing the say time function and keeping the
read continuously and read current line/sentence on the same key.

How about 1-2-3 to read currrent line? This way the lock command
can stay
the same.
