Rick, for portable speakers, check out your Radio Shack.  They have a small 
hinged pair that are not detachable when opened, but sound pretty good. 
They are powered by three AA batteries and are about the size of a 16 ounce 
coffee cup when closed.  They run about $20.  Pretty good!
