How long have you had it? If you have owned it for less than a year, it is still under warranty. Sounds like bent battery contacts. If you know someone electronically minded, he/she could probably fix those. Your problem doesn't sound serious.
Here is something else you can try. Take the batteries and memory card out of the Bookport, and leave them out for 24 hours. Put them in again, and see if that helps.
