The Web Braille was only down for 3 weeks at the most. Boy! Was that ever a tempest in a teapot!

Remember that NLS director Cylkie yanked access to Web Braille last year shortly after he learned that the files could be back translated into synthesized speech or text files.

I suppose there is nothing anyone can do. It is ironic that the webbraille can be used but the new audio books cannot. I am sure that APH would do all in their power to make the current bookport work with NLS books if NLS would give computer access. The thing is, that people will cheat if they are determined to do so--giving access for reading through the computer will not change that significantly.

Hi Nancy:

Unfortunately, that is not going to happen. Apparently, the current Book Port does not meet the specifications for the NLS Digital books. We cannot include a workaround for the software with a key, because NLS doesn't want access with the computers.

On the bright side (if there is one), at least we can develop Book Port 2 to include the specs.

Pamela,

Thank you for the BP2 update. I know this setback is discouraging for all
concerned.

On a brighter note....any further word about APH coming up with a key to
allow present BP users to download NLS books?

Thanks for all the help you give us.

As many of you know, APH has been working on the successor to Book Port,
dubbed Book Port II, for several months. Unfortunately, hardware problems
with one of the suppliers has put an unavoidable delay in the process.
We now expect that Book Port II will not be available in the near future.
It is difficult to predict with any accuracy when the newly redesigned
device will reach the marketplace.
APH will do everything in its power to reduce this time to market, but we
want to be honest with our customers and allow them to make plans.
