From what I heard, you have to have a player.

Does anyone know if NLS will still let you register for their program to download books even if you don't have a Victor stream?

Yes, you do have to register but it is all done online.

See https://www.nlstalkingbooks.org/dtb/DownloadPilot.html.

No, you will be able to download the books on the PC but you won't be able
to play them on the PC. You'll have to download them and then copy them
either directly to the player or to a memory card to put in the player.

Does that mean that, even if we had a machine for download, like Stream,
or,
hopefully soon, the Voice Sense, we still couldn't download books, after
all?
And all this time, they've been telling us we could. Now, I suppose,
we'll
have to wait forever for the specialized machines and get our books on
cartrige only, after all.
WHAT A CROCK!

Hi:

Unfortunately, I don't really understand it myself, so I probably won't
be
able to help you understand it. But anyway, the way it was explained to
me is that it's a security issue. They consider the computer a security
risk, so they won't permit you to do it through the computers.

Not that I would understand it, but What? "NLS doesn't want access with
the
computers?" Do you mean they don't want you to have access, or they
don't
really want us to?

Hi Nancy:

Unfortunately, that is not going to happen. Apparently, the current
Book
Port does not meet the specifications for the NLS Digital books. We
cannot include a workaround for the software with a key, because NLS
doesn't want access with the computers.

On the bright side (if there is one), at least we can develop Book Port
2
to include the specs.

Pamela,

Thank you for the BP2 update. I know this setback is discouraging for
all
concerned.

On a brighter note....any further word about APH coming up with a key to
allow present BP users to download NLS books?

Thanks for all the help you give us.

As many of you know, APH has been working on the successor to Book
Port,
dubbed Book Port II, for several months. Unfortunately, hardware
problems
with one of the suppliers has put an unavoidable delay in the process.
We now expect that Book Port II will not be available in the near
future.
It is difficult to predict with any accuracy when the newly redesigned
device will reach the marketplace.
APH will do everything in its power to reduce this time to market, but
we
want to be honest with our customers and allow them to make plans.
