It may be closer than you think. I've heard of seeds being included in some cell phones that were expected to have a short useful life of maybe a year or two. When they finally stopped working in their first intended purpose, you just activate the seed and plant the phone.

I hope to collect all of the ear buds I have lying around, plant them and
keep them well watered and fertilized, and see if I can grow any ears.

I never use ear buds anyway. I've got this huge collection of ear buds
that came with things, and I've just hoarded the earbuds in case the Red
Cross ever has an earbud shortage or something.
