actually its the button you pressed that vibrates. It even vibrates hard enough to hear it rattle. ****************************** Let a smile be your lantern of joy robert Doc Wright http://www.wrightplaceinc.net skype: talmidim msn godfearer15@xxxxxxxxxxx ----- Original Message ----- From: "Annette Carr" <amcarr@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <bookport@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, February 19, 2007 12:54 PM Subject: [bookport] Re: [Larry could you contact me re: audible signalsin KY I've heard that in other places where people have complained about the noise of audible signals, or in areas where the traffic noise is so loud that audible signals are useless, that they have installed vibrating signals. Yes, I laughed when I heard this at first. After you press the button and are waiting for the signal to tell you when to cross, you keep your hand on the pole or something, and it will vibrate when it is time to cross. We have 20 audible signals in town of the chirp and cuckoo type. There has been some new construction and the state has installed 3 integrated signals such as you use daily. I've worked with the town over the years regarding audible signals but there is a neighborhood group now contending that the signals violate the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection as noise pollution. We have the chirping/cuckoo on main streets but also in neighborhoods without complaint. This man is claiming that we can't put them in his neighborhood. One signal is going to be installed near a home with an autistic child so we already know we have to make some compromises on this signal finding out how to adjust it so that maybe the locator sound could come on approach instead of being on all the time. This is a main street where the signals are installed with constant moving traffic not as busy as where you live but certainly noisy and loud. The family with the autistic child lives across the street from a ball park believe it or not and also a skating rink which can be used late into the night and yet are participating in this complaint of the signal being too noisy. So my question to you is about whether or not there is housing in and around any of the signals in Louisville or is it a business district only? I'm trying to get together a bit of info about where the integrated signals are placed in other cities and towns in case we have to go beyond the information regarding ADA compliance. the signals although not required by the ADA are considered a reasonable accommodation and unless the town can show undue hardship it would be considered a denial of access not to install them. the town has installed 2 of the 3 but it is this last one that has become a huge source of contention. The town is a bit scared off by this man's tactic of using EPA standards but it seems to me if audible signals are installed in so many communities throughout the U.S. we probably aren't violating any EPA laws. Sorry for the length but it needed explanation. By the way our town is more than willing to install this last signal but is a little gun shy due to this man's letter. I have written my own letter pointing out the inaccuracies in his letter about audible signals, the ADA and conflict of disabilities. What a fun way to spend my long weekend! Thanks for any info you can provide.
