I had an original Dectalk, one of those big 15 pound honkers. Occasionally it
wouldn't come up to ready when you turned it on. A friend of mine told me to
hold it about a foot above the desk and drop it. Yep, it fixed the problem.
So, whenever that happened I would give it a jolt and away it would go again
for the next several months.

:I had one of the original tape-based VersaBrailles back in the eighties.
: It had a neglegeble, but chronic problem ... I can't even remember what
: it was. One day the unit took a tumble off my desk onto the concrete
: school floor. The only consequence was a slight scratch on the lid, and
: the chronic problem disappeared entirely, never to be seen again.
