Well, there are 1 pound ultra laptops now that would actually be lighter than
the PacMate, and provide the student with full computer access for not much
more than the PacMate after you add all the extras you end up having to buy for
the PacMate. Sony has a new ultra small laptop that weighs 1.2 pounds, has
WIFI, bluetooth, infrared, modem, and network card. Has 512 meg memory and 1.3
GB processor. Price is $1799.

Meantime, back to Book Port for excellent access to more file types than any of
the current notetakers can claim.

: Laptops are usually cheaper, but the pacmate offers some things that a
: laptop doesn't, in my mind, offer a student in seminar. Since my courses
: require lots of round-table discussion (they are in fact giant round table
: discussions) having a laptop in front of my face can make me appear
: alienating to sighed folks. Plus it's easier to balance in random places
: than a laptop - and less heavy. Easier to sling around, since it fits in my
: (giant, admittedly) purse and my laptop doesn't.
: But that would only be nice if I actually knew how to use it :)
