On a possibly related idea, often when I enter a string to search, there is
an "f" at the end.

A relatively minor issue, but this evening, I was writing a letter during
a four-hour bus trip. I found, both when leaving the file and returning to
it, and when transfering it to my PC, there were often garbage characters
and little bits of stuff I'd deleted at the end of the file. Has anyone
else noticed this?
