That's a good point about hearing the flight attendant. While I didn't 
consciously think of this aspect of noise-canceling headphones, they might 
not exactly be the safest thing for a blind person traveling alone to wear 
in many situations.

Not sure if it is helpful but I bought a set of noise cancelling
headphones from Radio Shack for $40. They do not prevent me from
hearing other people but they do cut out the rumble on planes and
in cars. I like the sound the supress and even the sound they
leave. I want to be able to hear the flight attendant. They take
one tripple A battery.
