If; and I emphasize the if; a recharging circuit were to be included in the BP, then I also think that some kind of sensing intelligence would be mandatory to keep people from attempting to recharge the wrong type of batteries because they either forgot or didn't know in the first place what kind of batteries were in the unit. For those of us who are techie enough to keep this kind of thing in mind, this isn't an issue, but I strongly suspect that we're in the minority of BP users and it would take only one instance of an attempted recharge of a set of alkalines or lithium ion batteries to create a huge legal headache for a lot of people, including APH. Frankly, I just don't think that a built-in recharging capability is worth all the additional baggage that would be required before the potential safety and liability hazards could be resolved. As others have said, keep the device as it is and let those who want to use rechargeable batteries of whatever type use them and bear the responsibility for obtaining and using the proper type of charger. With at least four different types of rechargeables currently available (NiCad, NiMH, 1-hour quick charge and 15-minute quick charge) and all the possiblities of mismatches, it's just too complicated and potentially dangerous an issue, in my opinion, for APH to involve itself with.=20 -----Original Message----- From: bookport-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bookport-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Cheryl and Dash Lenartiene Sent: Saturday, April 09, 2005 9:19 AM To: bookport@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bookport] Batteries and speakers--a compromise??? Hello list, After reading everyone's messages, I'd like to offer my thoughts. First a disclaimer: These proposals are made not knowing the plausibility or feasibility of implementing hardware changes, whether it would be cost-effective, whether an upgrade would be possible, mandatory, or a choice for the user, etc. So, I think I've covered most of the bases. These are just my thoughts, pure and simple. Regarding the battery issue, I propose the best of both worlds. I once had a Sony discman that had a built-in battery charger. It ran on AA batteries, both rechargeable and nonrechargeable. If you plugged in its adapter, not only would the unit run on AC power, but the internal battery charger would be activated. Granted you would want to take out nonrechargeables if you chose to run the unit off the AC adapter. But if you had rechargeables, they would recharge, whether the unit was also running or not. This would leave the user to decide if they ever wanted to use this function, or keep things as they are. Just a thought. Regarding the speakers, most devices that have a speaker, excluding cell phones, only allow you to deactivate the speaker by inserting a plug into the headphone jack. If an extra switch is a concern, I propose that we be able to deactivate the speaker in the Book Port's settings menu. This way, those who wanted the speaker could use it; those who felt it was a distraction or led to unnecessary battery drain could deactivate it. Just my thoughts, Cheryl
