Hi Grant,
with the front flap closed you can't press the buttons. The case is designed 
like a book, so the front protects the keys. For quic access, you just open 
the right edge, which is velcroed to the right side covering the CF card.

You still haven't *really* explained, so here's the question: can you press
buttons on the unit *without* opening the case?
