If the sluggish performance you get is long pauses where the BC says
nothing, I think I can guess your problem. If you have a text file with
lots of punctuation or spaces in the text and you have the "punctuation"
level at the default of "some with numbers" the BC will not say that
punctuation aloud, but it still takes it time to read through it. (If you
could see it, you would probably see its lips moving). I sometimes run into
this on things like the table of contents where you have the chapter title
followed by a line of dots and then the page number. It will say the
chapter title, say nothing for a long time and then say the page number.
As an experiment, set the punctuation setting to "all" and see what you get.

On this topic once again, it seems that the size of the file may not be the
issue as I have very large books which navigate well. The files I have
trouble with arise from microsoft word documents which tend to have a lot of
formatting at least the hard copy appears that way: in other words, a lot of
sections with borders and segments created within the MS Word program.
These particular documents were not scanned into Kurzweil but rather
imported directly from their electronic copy versions. I'm wondering if they
somehow retained some of the formatting which book courier has trouble
interpreting. Just a guess.
