Orual, the oldest daughter of the King of Glome, a small country not far outside
of Greece, loved the younger of her two sisters possessively, much as she did
Fox, the Greek slave who'd served as tutor to the three princesses and as chief
counselor to the King. But when Psyche is doomed to be sacrificed to the god of
the Mountain and Orual realizes her sister has survived her ordeal, she closes
her heart to the thought her sister is indeed happy with her fate and is now the
bride of the god, seeking to force Psyche to return to Glome and her previous
post as devoted near-daughter to Orual.
Thus begins Orual's own quest of self-discovery as she realizes what she has set
in motion and why. As for her hatred of the Gods, and particularly the god of
the Mountain--perhaps her indictment ought to have been turned around!
My favorite of Lewis's novels. Love the retelling of the myth of Cupid and
Psyche, and how Lewis's own faith is reflected in this. Decently read by May,
and well worth the listen. Got it on sale from Audible, but feel it would be
worth spending a whole credit for.
